Microphlebectomy : Treatment for Varicose Veins

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat varicose veins that are not caused by saphenous vein reflux. The abnormal vein is removed through a tiny incision or incisions using a special set of tools. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, and typically takes under an hour. Recovery is rapid, and most patients do not need to interrupt regular activity after ambulatory phlebectomy.

Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy or Ambulatory Phlebectomy (AP) is a office based procedure used to excise those unsightly bulging superficial varicose veins. AP is a minimally invasive procedure done under local anesthesia and performed through either a pinhole puncture or very small incisions (1mm). The results are excellent with little or no “down time”. AP differs from traditional vein stripping in that there is no hospitalization, minimal pain, minimal blood loss, no “down time”, no general anesthesia, no stitches required, and you return to normal activity within days.

On the day of the procedure you will take your prescribed medications with the addition of an antibiotic. The segment of vein to be removed will be marked while you are standing. After being positioned on the bed the marked area and its surrounding will be prepped and draped in a sterile fashion. Local (Lidocaine) as well as Tumescent anesthesia will be injected and several 1mm incisions are made along the course of the marked vein. A phlebectomy hook is used to extract the vein. There is minimal blood loss and pain.

Upon completion of the procedure you leg will be wrapped and your compression stockings (20-30mmHg) are to be worn. You are to wear your compression stockings continuously for the first 72hrs and then during the waking hours for the next 7days. You will need to follow up with Dr. Neimat in the next 1-2 days for inspection and possible dressing change. Detailed post-op instructions will be given prior to discharge.
